How to E Verify Your Income Tax Return?

Mar 07, 2018

It is necessary that you verify your returns as per the provisions of the law in order to complete the procedure of filing your income tax return. Read this article to know how you can e-verify your ITR:

When to file your ITR?

The last date to file tax returns is typically 31st July of every Assessment Year (AY). Assessment year is the year in which the income tax payer assesses his/her income, pays taxes and files a tax return for the previous year or the financial year. So, for the fiscal year 2017-18, the AY is 2018-19.

A taxpayer can now verify his/her return electronically. The E-verification of the Income Tax return can be done in the following ways:

1. Through Aadhaar Card

2. Through Bank Account

E-verification through Aadhaar details

Step 1:

· Visit the Income Tax e-filing website.

· Find “Login Here” button on the top right corner and click on it to log in to your account. If you do not have an ITR account, you can click on “Register Now” placed right below the Login Here button

· Then, enter your “User ID” (i.e., your PAN) and “Password” along with “Captcha Code” in the space provided on the page and click on “Login” tab.

These steps are standard for all the methods.

Step 2:

· Next, choose the e-Filed Returns/Forms option on your dashboard, which appears as soon as you log in.

· As shown in the example, the following screen will present an option that says “Click here to view your returns pending for e-Verification”.

· Once you click on that, the screen will show the pending list of ITR returns. Now, you have to select the return that needs to be verified and click on the e-verify button that comes next to the returns tab.

Step 3:

· Following that, you need to select “Option 3 – I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return” tab. Once the selection is made, you will get an OTP on your registered mobile number.

· If the Aadhaar is linked to your account, an OTP will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number (with Aadhaar card). The OTP code is only valid for 10 minutes from the time it is created and sent through SMS.

Step 4:

· Then, a popup will be displayed where you would be asked to enter the details of the OTP to complete the process.

Step 5:

· Enter your Aadhaar OTP in the box and click on Submit to e-Verify your return. If verification is successful, this screen will be displayed.

· All you have to do now is download the acknowledgment and save it for your personal records.

E-verification through Bank Account details

This option helps the taxpayer to generate EVC using the necessary information like the taxpayer’s bank account number, IFSC code, email address of the taxpayer, the mobile number registered with the bank, PAN details, and name used for filing returns.

The following steps can be used to e-verify ITR using this method.

Step 1

Visit the ITD’s e-filing website.

Step 2:

Just like the step 1 of e-verifying the return through Aadhar card, find “Login Here” button on the top right corner and click on it to log in to your account. If you do not have an ITR account, you can click on “Register Yourself” button.

Step 3:

After logging in, you need to select the 6th option on the main blue menu bar titled “Profile Setting”.

Step 4:

Next, click on the option of “Update Bank Account details”.

Step 5:

After that, select “Generate EVC using Bank Account details” while verifying E-Returns.

Step 6:

Then, prevalidate your bank account details to receive OTP

Step 7:

Now, your registered email address or registered mobile number will receive a 10-digit alpha-numeric E-verification code as shown in the example.

Step 8:

This code has to be entered in the box and submitted for the verification process.

Step 9:

Once the verification is complete, you will receive the following window, where you can download the receipt for your personal records.

This is how you can verify your returns online through your Adhaar Card or your Bank Account Details, without sending the acknowledgment through the post.
