Solar Chakra Mission

The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium enterprises launched a Solar Charkha Mission on 27th June 2018. Solar Charkha Mission Yojana was launched by Ram Nath Kovind, President of India on the event of Udyam Sanham on World Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Day.

To promote the production of Khadi, the Indian Government has launched a scheme called as Solar Charkha Mission Yojana under Solar Spindle Mission.

The scheme supports Khadi production by offering five crore employment opportunities.

The components of Solar Charkha

  • Each beneficiary will get two solar charkhas of 10 spindles each.
  • One cluster is to have 1000 solar charkhas.
  • 2042 artisans will get direct employment in a cluster that will work with full capacity.
  • The government has set an outlay of Rs.550 crores for 50 clusters between 2018-2020.
  • One lakh artisan with a focus on women and youth will be directly employed in 50 clusters under the solar charkha scheme.
  • One cluster will attract a maximum subsidy of Rs. 9.60 crores.

Aim of launching Solar Charkha Mission:

  • To ensure inclusive growth by employment generation, especially for women and youth, and sustainable development through solar charkha cluster in rural areas.
  • To boost the rural economy and help in arresting migration from rural to urban areas
  • To leverage low-cost, innovative technologies and processes for substance.

Features of Solar Charkha Mission

  • Establishing of the Solar Charkha Clusters: It is a focal village along with surrounding villages that falls within the radius of 8-10 Km
  • It will have 200-2042 beneficiaries
  • Spinner, weavers, stitches, and other skilled artisans are the beneficiaries of the mission solar charkha (MSC)
  • 20% of procurement is required by the government agencies from MSMEs.
  • 1 lakh women will be employed in every parliament constituency through the Social Security Scheme.
  • In addition to this, the scheme provides 1,100 jobs to every panchayat.

Financial assistance to the Solar Charkha Scheme

There are three types of project interventions:

  • Capital subsidy for individual and for Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV)
  • Interest Subvention for Working Capital
  • Capacity Building.

Significance of the Mission

These solar charkhas are to be operated using solar power which is a renewable energy source. It will help in the development of the Green Economy as it is an environmentally friendly program. It will also generate sustainable employment for the artisans.

Eligibility

Only small-scale business applicants holding an MSME certificate are eligible to apply for this scheme.
