Universal Account Number

Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit number which is issued by the Ministry of Employment and Labor under the Government of India. With its help, employees can carry out many EPF-related services online in a hassle-free way such as EPF withdrawal, EPF transfer, check EPF account statement, access the EPF account passbook, and apply for loans against EPF.

Features of UAN

Mentioned below are the main features of the UAN:

  • UAN helps in keeping track of the number of times an employee has changed jobs.
  • Only after the introduction of UAN, the EPFO has got access to the bank and Know Your Customer (KYC) details of an employee.
  • With UAN, the employer involvement has been reduced as the PF of the old organization will be transferred to the new PF account after the completion of KYC verification.

How to get the UAN?

There are two methods that employees can use to find their UAN-

Through the employer: Employees can find their UAN by asking their employers or you can also check the same on your salary slip.

 By using the Member ID on the UAN portal: If you are unable to get the UAN from the employer, you can use the UAN portal to get the UAN. Follow the below-mentioned steps to get your UAN on the portal:

  • Firstly, visit the UAN portal by clicking here.
  • After that click on ‘Know Your UAN Status’ which is available on the right-hand side of the page.


  • Now, enter all the details such as the state and EPFO office, name, date of birth, and captcha.


  • After entering the above-mentioned details, click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’.


You will receive the PIN on your registered mobile number. After that click on OTP and get UAN after entering the PIN.

UAN Activation

To avail of all the benefits and services of the EPFO portal, employees need to activate their UAN. The activation of the UAN is a simple process and it is mentioned below:

Firstly, you need to visit the EPFO portal by clicking here.

After that click on ‘For Employees’ under the ‘Our Services’ tab.


On the next page, click on ‘Member UAN/Online Services (OCS/OTCP)’ under the ‘Services’ option.


Now, click on ‘Activate UAN’.


After that, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number.

Now, click on ‘Validate OTP and Activate UAN’ after entering the OTP and checking the disclaimer box.


UAN Login

After activating the UAN, you can log in to the EPFO portal using your UAN as a username and the new password. After logging in, you can avail the following EPF-related activities-

  • Download the UAN card and passbook
  • View PF linking status and list all member IDs
  • View PF transfer claim status, file transfer claim, and system-generated transfer claim status
  • Edit personal details including mobile number and email ID
  • Update KYC information and upload KYC documents
  • View helpdesk contacts

The following are the documents required for obtaining a UAN-

  • You need to submit the bank details such as branch name, IFSC code, and account number.
  • Proof of identity such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving License, etc., must be submitted.
  • Any address proof, your PAN Card, and Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Card.
