Bhagat Singh Martyrdom Day

Every year, Bhagat Singh Martyrdom day is celebrated on 23rd of March to commemorate the contribution of one of the revolutionaries who gave his life for the freedom of India. So, this day is celebrated to pay tribute to the three martyrs namely Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru.

Importance of Bhagat Singh Martyrdom Day

The trio, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru were hanged for killing John Saunders in December 1928. They killed him by mistake thinking that he is James Scott, the British Police superintendent. It was believed that Scott was the person behind the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Later, Bhagat Singh and his two associates got themselves arrested by exploding bombs in the central legislative assembly in Delhi. Three of them have undertaken several revolutionary works including hunger strikes during their imprisonment period. So, to mark the day, several programmes are also organised across India, especially in Punjab besides giving homage to the freedom fighter.
