Commercial driving license in India

A commercial driving license or a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is an important government authorized document. It certifies the holder's ability to operate a motor vehicle in the public areas and on highways. It is like a usual driving license but for driving commercial vehicles only. The license is provided by the respective RTO after applicants pass the written and practical tests.

What are the eligibility criteria for obtaining a commercial driving license?

The eligibility criteria to avail a commercial driving license is as follows:

  • The minimum age at which an applicant can obtain a commercial driving license is 18 years and in few states is 20 years (the age criteria may vary depending on the rules and regulations of the state).
  • The applicant must have a learner’s license.
  • The applicant must have passed 8th standard and should have basic knowledge about traffic signs and rules.
  • The applicant must have taken the training from a government motor school or a school tied-up with a state government.

What are the documents required for obtaining a commercial driving license?

Proof of Address (any of the following)

  • Passport
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter's ID Card
  • Ration Card
  • Utility bills issued in the applicant’s name

 Proof of Identity (any of the following)

  • Aadhaar card
  • PAN card
  • Passport
  • Birth Certificate
  • 10th Grade mark sheet
  • Duly filled Form 2, Form 1A and Form 5
  • Passport size photographs
  • Application Fee

How to apply for a commercial driving license in India?

In India, individuals can apply for a commercial driving license either online or offline by the below-mentioned procedure. Here is how you can apply for it using both ways:

Online application process

  • Firstly, you need to log in to the Sarathi website and download Form 4
  • Fill out the form and upload it along with the documents and passport-size photographs on the portal
  • After uploading the documents, you need to provide a medical certificate in Form No. 1A. If an applicant wishes to drive an HMV, he/ she will need to give a ‘Driver Refreshing Training Certificate’
  • The applicant will also need to take training from a Government Driving School or one that has been authorized by the State Government as mentioned in Form No. 5
  • After submitting the things mentioned above, applicants will receive a serial number on their registered mobile number.
  • On the allotted day, the applicant needs to go to the center and give the test.
