How to link driving license to digilocker

This is the era of digitization, be it is, the world of E-commerce or financial service, everywhere, digital transactions are making its way. Nowadays carrying a physical document such as a driving license may prove to be cumbersome. So, the government of India, made it easy for commuters by introducing DL in an electronic form with an aim to easily link DL with any financial or government services. 

Under the Digital India Initiative, the Central Government comes up with the ‘ DigiLocker’ mobile apps. With the help of this app, one can easily store all electronic forms of documents on a cloud, it removes the need to carry physical documents all time.

Once you sign up for DigiLocker, you are given 1GB storage space to save all your essential files.

Advantages of keeping driving license in your Digilocker:

  • It is not a mandate to carry a driving license everywhere. You can easily refer your online account to show it anytime if required.
  • There is no need to remember driving License as you can easily retrieve any information pertaining to DL online.
  • If you are applying for any other document like PAN or Voter ID, the respective department can make use of your driving license as identity proof by directly accessing it from DigiLocker. You do not have to submit the DL manually.
  • Just like physical DL,  your digital driving license on DigiLocker can also be verified. The officer only needs to scan the QR Code on the digital DL or use the QR scan facility on the mobile app to spot verify the document.

Steps to link driving license to DigiLocker are as follows:

Step 1:  Log in to the DigiLocker website – https://digilocker.gov.in/ or download the mobile app from Play Store if you are an Android user and iOS if you are an Apple phone user.

Step 2: Sign-in or sign up with a username and password if you have not yet registered. Please note that the Aadhaar number is a mandatory requirement to sign up for the DigiLocker account.

Step 3: On the left of the home page of the DigiLocker, select ‘Issued Documents’.

Step 4: On the new page, click on ‘Get Issued Documents’.

Step 5: On this page, under the ‘Central Government’ menu, select ‘Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’.

Step 6: Now select ‘Driving License’.

Step 7: On the new page, your name and date of birth will be automatically populated by DigiLocker. Enter your driving license number (Format: KA0419920009646), select the checkbox to provide consent that you are willing to share your Aadhaar details.

Step 8: Click on ‘Get Document’.

The DigiLocker system will automatically export your DL from the database and saves it in your DigiLocker. You are required to show the digital copy of your DL for all purposes. All the government departments can request your documents online if they want it for administrative purposes.

This is very helpful in case you lose your documents or any other unforeseen situation. You have it all saved in the cloud.
