Driving License application process in Uttar Pradesh

What kind of driving licenses can you apply for in Uttar Pradesh?

The individuals applying for permanent driving license in Uttar Pradesh can apply for the vehicle they wish to attain the permit for. The Regional Transport Office of Uttar Pradesh provides licenses for the following vehicles:

  • Light motor passenger vehicles that include cars, jeeps, delivery vans, autorickshaws and taxis

Eligibility criteria to apply for driving license in Uttar Pradesh

  • The minimum age requirement for obtaining a driving license in Uttar Pradesh is 18 years old
  • To apply for a commercial vehicle license, the applicant's age should be above 20 years
  • The applicant should apply for a driving license 30 days after getting the learner's license and within 180 days from the date of the issue mentioned in the learner’s license
  • The applicant should be well-versed with traffic rules and regulations
  • Applicant must have a valid learning license

Documents required for driving license in Uttar Pradesh

To procure a driving license in Uttar Pradesh, the candidate needs to submit the below documents at the concerned RTO office.

  • Original learner’s license
  • Application in Form No. 4
  • Form 1
  • Driving certificate in Form 5 (in case of transport vehicle license), from an approved training school
  • Three passport size photographs
  • Proof of residence (utility bills, lease/rent agreement)
  • Valid government ID proof (Voter’s ID, Pan card, Passport)
  • Valid vehicle documents

Procedure to obtain a driving license in Uttar Pradesh

To get a driving license in Uttar Pradesh, the applicant has to fill Form-4 and submit it, along with other requisite documents to the RTO Officer issuing the license. The documents will be verified after which a driving test will be conducted. The applicants are also required to bring their motor vehicles for which they want to obtain a license. Biometric identification tests such as retina scans and fingerprints are taken if the applicant clears the competency test. The license is sent by post at the address mentioned, by the applicant, in the form. In some RTOs, the applicant can go to the specific zone and collect it in person. Alternatively, applicants can also file for a driving license online by visiting http://uptransport.upsdc.gov.in/en-us/ along with the required documents and the fee.

How to check your driving license status in Uttar Pradesh?

The status of the driving license can be checked either online or by visiting your nearest RTO. For an online check, the applicant is required to visit http://uptransport.upsdc.gov.in/en-us/ and enter details such as receipt number, license number, name, and date of application. Once these details are submitted, the status is displayed.

How can you make corrections in your driving license online?

If an applicant wishes to make any changes in their driving license, they need to forward a written application along with the relevant documents with the correct information. Remember, this can only be done in the same RTO which issued your original license. Once approved, you can collect your license with the correct information on the same day. You will be charged a small fee. Also, the applicant is required to be present at the RTO office to be photographed by the official for record purposes.

How to get a duplicate driving license in Uttar Pradesh?

In Uttar Pradesh, applicants can also file their application for a duplicate driving license if it is stolen or lost. Remember, you should apply for a duplicate license within 6 months after the official driving license is lost or stolen. The duplicate driving license can be obtained at the RTO who initially issued you the original license. The applicant should bring all the required documents and get verification from the RTO officials. One can also apply for a duplicate driving license online via the state department website.

  • A copy of FIR (First Information Report), if the license is stolen

  • Form 1

  • Challan clearance report from Traffic Police (in case of commercial driving license)
  • An affidavit detailing the reason for applying for a duplicate driving license
  • Details of your original driving license 
  • Application fee

How to renew your driving license in Uttar Pradesh?

You have two options i.e. online and offline. You can choose the one that suits you the most. In online mode, you need to visit the official website of your state. Fill the renewal application form 9 there and submit it along with the documents. Once your documents and application are verified, your license will be renewed. If you are choosing the offline mode, visit your nearest RTO office and collect the application form 9. Fill the details, submit the documents, and pay the fees. After successful verification, you will get your license renewed.

Private Vehicle License:

  • Form No. 9
  • Original driving license
  • Three passport size photographs
  • Age proof (any one of these - Aadhar Card, Birth Certificate, Passport, Voter’s ID)
  • Form No. 1 i.e. self-declaration of physical fitness
  • Current residence proof (lease/rental agreement, passport, ration card, or utility bill)

Commercial Vehicle License:

  • All the documents same as required in the private vehicle licenses
  • Medical certificate in Form No. 1A
  • Driver refreshing training certificate in case of heavy motor vehicle

Driving license test procedure in Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, a driving license test is conducted to check whether an applicant can drive a motor vehicle or not. The test is conducted as per rule 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 in presence of a Motor Vehicles Inspector. If the applicant passes the test, then the driving license is delivered to the doorstep within 7 days.
