Getting a learning license is a very first step towards becoming an authorized driver in India. However, the applicant needs to pass a driving license test before the learning license is issued. You can book a test slot through your state’s Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) website. Here you can know everything you need to know about a driving license test.

What is the procedure for a driving license test?

Use the form CMV (central motor vehicle) 4 to apply for a driving license test. You can get it either from the inquiry counter at an RTO or download it from the RTO website as per your convenience. Along with this, you would also need to submit three passport size photographs along with the form.

You will need the following documents to establish your eligibility for the driving license test:

  • A valid learner’s license
  • All the documents related to the vehicle which you propose to drive for the test. This includes:
  • Registration Certificate
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Tax Card
  • Pollution under Control (PUC) Certificate
  • In case of a transport vehicle, the Fitness Certificate, and any other related documents.
  • In case you are appearing for the license test for a transport vehicle, you will also need to submit form CMV 5 issued by your driving training school.
  • After proving your eligibility, you need to pay a small fee of Rs. 50 for the driving test to the RTO. However, the revised fee is Rs. 300 now. You need to submit your application form with the above-mentioned documents as well as the fee. 
  • In the last step, your driving test will be conducted. You need to appear for the test at the designated time. If you pass the test, the driving licence will be issued to you within a couple of days.

Driving test for commercial motor/heavy vehicles

Until 2014, getting a license for heavy vehicles such as buses, lorries and trucks was not very difficult as the test practices were very easy and relaxed. However, with the time rules have become much more stringent and the test more structured. Now, the applicants need to test well on a track specially designed for heavy vehicles. Only those applicants will be able to pass the test who have good skills in driving heavy vehicles on the roads.

Eligibility for heavy vehicles

  • Age: The age requirement may vary from one state to another. The minimum and maximum age required for getting a commercial driving license are 18 years to 22 years. 
  • Mental health: One must also have sound mental health to get the driver's license for commercial vehicles.
  • Education: The applicant must have completed formal education at least up to 8th standard.
  • Training: The applicant must undergo training at a government authorized motor school and obtain form CMV 5 from the school.

What is the test sequence for light motor vehicles?

Applicants will be tested on the following skills during driving license test for light motor vehicles (LMVs)-

  • Ability to parallel park
  • Ability to drive forward on an 8-shaped track
  • Ability to drive up a gradient without any backward movement
  • Ability to drive backwards on an S-shaped track

What is the test sequence for two-wheeler motor vehicles?

The applicant must be able to navigate through an 8-shaped track without placing his/her foot down till the track is complete.

What happens when you fail in the driving test?

If a candidate fails to pass the driving license test, all the documents are returned to the candidate. One can reappear for the test after seven days. The applicable fees will have to be repaid.

Things to keep in mind while appearing for the driving license test:

  • Make sure you do not forget to bring your learner’s license and other relevant documents while appearing for the driving license test.
  • Also, get the test slot booking slip with you
  • Make sure that you are familiar with the road signs and signals before you take the test
  • Avoid stalling the vehicle during the driving test as an inspector may consider this as a sign that you do not yet have the requisite driving skills.

Dos and Don’ts while taking the driving license test

  • Always try to appear at least an hour before the slotted time to appear for the driving license test
  • Always reach the venue with the respective class of vehicle for which you have applied for the license
  • Do wear a seat belt while driving a car/four-wheeler for the test
  • Make sure you wear a helmet while driving a two-wheeler for the test
