Activities performed by an RTO
To issue driving licenses: The RTO is a renowned body that deals with issuing driving licenses to individuals. Apart from issuing a license, they are also responsible for license renewal, issuing the duplicate licenses, and conducting driving tests as well.
Vehicle registration: One of the primary responsibilities of an RTO is to maintain a vehicle database. This is done while performing the function of vehicle registration. All the new vehicles need to be registered at the applicable RTO after which you get the license plate of your vehicle. Besides this, they also help in the following:
Collecting the Road Tax: The government levies certain taxes such as road tax on your vehicle. The RTO is responsible for collecting it. This tax is usually performed while registering the vehicle for the first time.
Vehicle Inspection: The RTO is responsible for checking if the vehicles on the road comply with the rules mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act. They conduct inspections for the same from time-to-time.
Environmental Concerns: The RTO also addresses environmental concerns as per the Motor Vehicles Act. For example, it conducts activities related to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)/Liquid Petroleum Gas conversion and PUC (Pollution Under Control) testing centres.
Safety of roads: The RTO performs this important function as well by continuously making all of us aware of the safety measures to be taken on roads in various ways.
