Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti

Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated in remembrance of Valmiki, a Sanskrit poet who wrote the epic Ramayana. The birth anniversary is celebrated every year with great joy. However, the date of this event may vary from year to year and is determined by the lunar calendar.

How is Jayanti celebrated?

To celebrate this day, people from the Valmiki community involve themselves in doing charity among the community and carrying out a procession, and singing devotional songs. The temples of Valmiki are nicely decorated with flowers while his followers sing kirtans and bhajans to honor the sage. Even Shobha Yatras are also organized in some parts of the country. This day is mostly celebrated in the North Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab among others. This year, it is celebrated on 14 April, Thursday.
